Ferrero, Haas survive three-setters in D.C. Juan Carlos Ferrero and Tommy Haas score three-set wins at the Legg Mason Classic on Tuesday. They defeat Nicolas Lapentti and Frank Dancevic, respectively.

Juan Carlos Ferrero d. (LL) Nicolas Lapentti 6-4, 6-7(5), 6-0

Playing just two days after finishing runner-up at the Croatia Open, Ferrero made a successful turnaround by taking Lapentti in three sets in the first round of the Legg Mason Tennis Classic on Tuesday afternoon. Ferrero needed two hours and 30 minutes to book his place in a second-round showdown with Tommy Robredo.

This one was an entertaining baseline battle all the way through. Ferrero was in devastating form from the back of the court in set one, but Lapentti matched him shot for shot in grueling second set. Even in the third set, Lapentti--who got into the main draw as a lucky loser--was far more competitive than thr 6-0 score suggests. The 31-year-old Ecuadorian could not capitalize on any of his three break points. Ferrero's rock-solid groundstrokes overcame a solid serving day for Lapentti, who struck 10 aces and just one double-fault.

    (10) Tommy Haas d. Frank Dancevic 6-1, 4-6, 6-4

Haas came through this high-quality affair after one hour and 55 minutes of inspired tennis. For a while, however, it looked like things would be far easier for Haas. Washington's No. 10 seed made up for 38 percent serving in the first set by by putting on a brilliant all-court show.

Haas continued to struggle on serve in the second frame of play and this time Dancevic capitalized with a pair of breaks. The 111th-ranked Canadian came up with some spectacular shots and stayed competitive from the start of the second set until the very end of the match. One mediocre service game for Dancevic was the difference, and Haas saved all three of the break points he faced during the final set on his way to the third round. Next up for the world No. 23 is either Ferrero or Robredo.
