Juan Martin Del Potro recovers from a set deficit to defeat Yen-Hsun Lu on Tuesday night in Washington, D.C. Del Potro awaits either Lleyton Hewitt or Dudi Sela in round three.
It took Juan Martin Del Potro a full set to get his game together in what was his first match since Wimbledon. Del Potro staged an impressive comeback to knock out Yen-Hsun Lu 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 in the second round of the Legg Mason Tennis Classic late on Tuesday night. Washington's defending champion needed one hour and 50 minutes to set up a third-round ecounter against either Lleyton Hewitt or Dudi Sela.
Del Potro's last match prior to this week was a second-round loss to Hewitt at the All-England Club, and his rust showed in set one against Lu. In fairness to Del Potro's opponent, Lu was positively on fire from the baseline throughout the opening frame of play. Del Potro did himself no favors by putting in just 47 percent of his first serves.
Finally, however, the 25-year-old from Chinese Taipei began to cool off and Del Potro raised his level simultaneously. Del Potro's power began to take a toll on Lu, whose forehand started to break down ever so slightly. The No. 6 player in the world used one break to force a decisive third set, which he took with relative ease. Del Potro won all 11 of his first-serve points in the final set and only two total in his last four service games.
The 20-year-old Argentine finished with six double-faults but also 11 aces. Del Potro has faced Hewitt just that one time, while he is 2-1 lifetime against Sela. One of his victories over Sela came in the second round of last year's Legg Mason Classic. Del Potro went on to defeat Viktor Troicki for the title.
