Mikhail Youzhny and Frank Dancevic win their openers at the Legg Mason Classic on Monday. They take out Robert Kendrick and Santiago Giraldo, respectively.
Mikhail Youzhny d. Robert Kendrick 7-5, 3-6, 6-1
Youzhny survived a back-and-forth affair with Kendrick, booking his place in the second round of the Legg Mason Tennis Classic after one hour and 40 minutes. Kendrick led 5-2 in the first set but promptly lost the next five games to throw away the opening frame of play.
Then it was Youzhny's turn to give back the momentum. After an impressive five games to end the first, the Russian fell apart in set two and never saw a single break point. One more see-saw took place, however, and in the final set it went in favor of Youzhny. The world No. 65 lost only three points in four service games and used two breaks to ultimately prevail with ease. Next up for Youzhny is No. 5 seed Robin Soderling.
Frank Dancevic d. (Q) Santiago Giraldo 6-4, 6-3
Giraldo qualified for the main draw, but he was no match for Dancevic once there. Dancevic fired 11 aces in 10 service games, lost a total of only 11 points on serve, and never faced a break point. The 111th-ranked Canadian converted just two of seven break points, but one break in each set was easily enough for Dancevic to prevail. Dancevic will take on No. 10 seed Tommy Haas in the second round.
Also advancing on Monday was Yen-Hsun Lu of Chinese Taipei. Lu came back from a break down in the third set to beat American wild card Michael Russell 4-6, 6-1, 7-5. Defending champion and No. 2 seed Juan Martin Del Potro will face Lu on Tuesday night.
