Sam Querrey captured his first title of the season at the LA Tennis Open Sunday afternoon, posting a three-set win over first-time ATP World Tour finalist Carsten Ball. The American wins his second career title.
Sam Querrey triumphed in the championship match in Los Angeles on Sunday, snagging his first ATP World Tour title of the season. The 21-year-old American had reached back-to-back finals at the tournaments in Newport and Indianapolis, but came up a bit short in both matches. Querrey overcame a second-set letdown against Australian qualifier Carsten Ball Sunday afternoon, prevailing in three sets, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1. The sixth seed becomes the 16th American player to hoist the championship trophy at the LA Tennis Open. With the win, Querrey sits atop the US Open Series men’s standings with 115 points, placing him ahead of Indianapolis title-winner Robby Ginepri. The 21-year-old American adds his second Tour title to his resume, having won the 2008 tournament in Las Vegas.
After exchanging breaks of serve to reach 3-3 in the opening set, Querrey secured his second break during the eighth game. The American struck a backhand pass on break point, ending a long exchange at net to pull ahead 5-4. Querrey missed two chances to close the first set, but connected on the third. The sixth seed finished the set 6-4 following an errant forehand from Ball.
Querrey played a sloppy game at 3-4 in set two, donating two double faults to fall behind break points. The Australian benefitted from a short second serve, pocketing a break on a backhand winner. Ball collected three set points at 5-3, leveling the match when Querrey hit a forehand error.
Querrey recovered in the third set, taking a 3-0 lead after the Australian dropped his opening service game. The American snagged an insurance break at 4-1, aided by another netted backhand from Ball. Querrey, who completed the match with 27 winners, held two championship points at 5-1, completing his title-winning run on his 11th ace of the afternoon.

I think they said he'd be around 140, Rafter.
I watched that match this morning on my DVR (I'm way behind) and was all set to pronounce Querrey the Choke King. But he surprised me by actually winning a final No "Dinaro Safin" jokes today...

I like this kid, Carsten Ball! What will his ranking be after making it to the finals, Kelli?
