Ernests Gulbis survives Kevin Kim--and a stomach bug--in three sets on Sunday. Gulbis is joined in the Washington second round by Wayne Odesnik.
Ernests Gulbis d. Kevin Kim 7-5, 3-6, 6-3
Gulbis needed one hour and 49 minutes to fend off Kim and reach the second round of the Legg Mason Classic on Sunday evening. The 20-year-old Latvian made things difficult on himself right from the start. Five of Kim's six service games in the first set went to deuce, but Gulbis failed to capitalize until his third break point of the match with Kim serving to stay in it at 5-6.
Apparently starting to feel sick several games later, Gulbis all but tanked the second set. He called for a medical timeout prior to the third, then caught a huge break in the form of a 20-minute rain delay. Gulbis came back revitalized and took the final set--and the match--thanks to three more service breaks. Next up for Gulbis is No. 8 seed Tomas Berdych.
Wayne Odesnik d. Paul Capdeville 4-6, 6-2, 6-4
Odesnik survived a baseline battle with Capdeville and booked his place in the Washington second round after two hours and six minutes. The 94th-ranked American surrendered serve three times in the first set in part because he put in just 50 percent of his first deliveries. After that, however, Odesnik was clearly the fitter player amidst hot conditions.
Capdeville collapsed on serve in set two, making a mere 35 percent of his first offerings. The 83rd-ranked Chilean was unable to save any of the three break points he faced. An early break to Odesnik essentially put an end to Capdeville's chances. A routine service hold for Odesnik at 5-4 set up a second-round encounter with 13th-seeded Igor Andreev.
