Nikolay Davydenko's strategy of staying for as long as possible on the European clay has paid big dividends, with the former No. 3 Russian lifting from 12th back to 8th on the ATP after claiming back-to-back titles at Hamburg and Umag.
Out of the picture for Davydenko is an early trip to the States, where the US Open still doesn't start for another three weeks. Instead, the 28-year-old has been staying in his comfort zone and loving it despite some weather troubles in Hamburg.
The warm Adriatic conditions of beachside Umag last week especially suited him. "It's not easy to adapt on change of climate. In Hamburg, there was never more then 20 degrees Celsius and it rained almost every day. Here is very hot".
"I prefer to play on clay and won't got to the US until absolutely necessary", said the player due to start his North American summer in next week's Montreal Masters. "Why go there when we have so many tournaments over here".
That attitude has been proven correct over the pat three weeks with the Russian starting his post-Wimbledon campaign with a Stuttgart quarter-final.
