Thomaz Bellucci defeated Germany’s Andreas Beck to win the Allianz Suisse Open on Sunday. Bellucci is the first Brazilian to win a title in 5 years.
Thomaz Bellucci ends a long drought for Brazlian tennis. Since the retirement of Gustavo Kuerten, the country has had little to cheer about on the ATP singles front. Bellucci changed all of that on Sunday in Gstaad.
Andreas Beck was the rankings favorite going into the final. The German’s ranking was twice Bellucci’s – 51 to the Brazilian’s 119. Beck had been enjoying good form all tournament long, though he skated through to the final never having faced a tournament seed. Conversely, Bellucci had an impressive second round win over the top seed Stanislas Wawrinka. The upset boosted his confidence and propelled him through the tournament.
Beck was not able to dent Bellucci’s serve throughout the match. The Brazilian fought off the only break point against him (in the second set). Beck was not much worse on serve, the difference coming down to a single break point opportunity converted from the Brazilian. The first set went to Bellucci 6-4.
The second set was more closely contested. Bellucci had 2 break point chances, but Beck was able to hold him off. With neither man budging on serve, a second set tiebreak ensued. Bellucci and his tough serving continued through the breaker. The Brazilian allowed Beck just 2 points as he closed out the match with authority.
