The loud and rowdy "Samurai" cheer squad of American Sam Querrey are hard to miss whenever they front up at tennis matches to support their No. 32 hero.
But the antics in the stands of the group of 12-15 shirtless former high school mates of the local Californian were particularly hard to take for German Tommy Haas, knocked out as top seed by Querrey in the semi-finals of the Los Angeles Open.
The face-and chest-painted fans got up the nose of Florida-based Haas, an Americanised European well acquainted with the boisterous national streak which manifests itself at sporting events.
But Haas would gladly give the chip to the "Samurai", who made it a point to jeer his errors in defeat and shout "U-S-A" at frequent intervals.
"Those guys just showed they have no class, It's up to Sam to take control of the situation if he wants to", said the 31-year-old who stood 16-3 since May after winning the Halle title and plying a Wimbledon semi-final against Roger Federer.
"This was not the fifth set of a US Open".
"I'm still playing tennis for the big matches",said the former world No. 2. "For my first summer hardcourt match, I'm pretty pleased".
Haas said he will carry forward with his hardcourt preparation, aiming to peak for the US Open starting in a month, an event where he owns three quarter-final finishes.
