Sam Querrey and Carsten Ball moved safely through to the final four at the LA Tennis Open, posting quarterfinal victories Friday afternoon. Mardy Fish withdrew prior to his quarterfinal, citing an abdominal injury.

Qualifier Carsten Ball reached his first ATP World Tour semifinal after defeating American John Isner in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4. The 22-year-old Australian secured a break of the Isner serve at 3-3 in the opening set and 2-2 in the second set. Ball struck his 9th ace of the day on match point, booking a place in the semis in just 63 minutes. The Australian finished the match with 16 winners, capturing 76% of his first-service points.
Ball will face Leonardo Mayer in the semifinals. The Argentine moved into the final four following opponent Mardy Fish’s withdrawal.
(6) Sam Querrey def. (4) Dudi Sela 6-3, 7-5
Sixth seed Sam Querrey advanced to his third consecutive tournament semifinal on Friday, dismissing fourth seed Dudi Sela, 6-3, 7-5. The 21-year-old held eleven of 11 service games, completing the one-hour and 16-minute quarterfinal without facing a break point. Querrey pocketed a break of serve at 3-2 in the first set and 5-5 in the second, capitalizing on a double fault from Sela. The American ended the afternoon with 7 aces, snagging a solid 93% of the points on his first serve.
Querrey awaits the winner of the Haas-Safin quarterfinal. The top-seeded German and the eighth-seeded Russian will contest their match late Friday evening.

Second seed Mardy Fish withdrew before his quarterfinal-round clash with Leonardo Mayer, citing a strained oblique. The American had sustained the original injury during the Davis Cup tie with Croatia in early July.
