Tommy Haas posted his fifth career victory over Marat Safin at the LA Tennis Open late Friday evening. The top-seeded German is through to the semifinals to face Sam Querrey.
Top seed Tommy Haas extended his lead to 5-2 lifetime over eight seed Marat Safin in Los Angeles on Friday. The German saved three set points in the opening set to take the quarterfinal-round match in straight sets, 7-6, 6-2. Haas makes his third consecutive appearance in a semifinal this season, having reached the final four in Halle and Wimbledon. The 31-year-old, a title-winner in 2004 and 2006, remains on track to win his third championship at the LA Tennis Open.
Both players donated a host of unforced errors during the opening set, striking a total 41 between them. Safin secured his second break of the set at 5-5, putting himself in position to serve for a one-set lead. The Russian held two set points, but failed to convert either one. Haas broke back on his third break point opportunity, forcing a tie-break after Safin struck a backhand long. The German collected three set points to reach 6-3, closing the opening set on a forehand pass.
Safin, continuing to struggle on serve, saved five break points during the opening game of the second set. Haas snagged a break at 2-2 and an insurance break at 4-2. The German held four of 4 service games in set two, completing the rest of the match without facing a break point. The top seed closed the set 6-2, following a backhand error from the Russian.
Haas meets sixth-seeded American Sam Querrey in the semifinals on Saturday night. The 21-year-old defeated fourth seed Dudi Sela in the quarterfinals Friday afternoon, 6-3, 7-5.
