Russia’s Igor Andreev and Thomaz Bellucci of Brazil advanced to the semifinals in Gstaad.
Igor Andreev def. Jeremy Chardy 6-3, 6-3
Russia’s Igor Andreev took just over one hour to defeat Jeremy Chardy of France. Andreev came into the tournament with some mediocre clay results on the year. He had one decent result in Casablanca where he made the semifinals and a third round result at Roland Garros. He was impressive on Friday over the 33 ranked Chardy though. Chardy earned just 1 break point in the match in the first set. The Frenchman was unable to convert. Andreev secured 3 service breaks in the match to seal the easy straight set victory.
Thomaz Bellucci def. Nicolas Kiefer 3-6, 1-0 (ret.)
The quarterfinal match between Thomaz Bellucci of Brazil and Germany’s Nicolas Kiefer looked more like a first aid demonstration rather than a tennis match. Bellucci had some undisclosed problem with his abdomen. He was heavily taped through the torso and required the trainer between the first and second sets. He had a dreadful first set. He could not seem to keep the ball in play for more than a few strokes. Kiefer also had visits from the trainer after the first rally of the second set. The German badly twisted his ankle and had it taped. Another visit from the trainer and another attempt at playing confirmed that Kiefer would be unable to continue. Bellucci will move into Saturday’s semifinal against Igor Andreev.
