Mardy Fish moved through to the quarterfinals of the LA Tennis Open late Thursday evening. The American rallied to defeat wildcard Chris Guccione in three sets.
Second seed Mardy Fish posted his third career victory over Australian wildcard Chris Guccione on Thursday, rallying from a set deficit to defeat the Australian, 6-7, 7-6, 6-4. The American, withstanding two dozen aces from the Guccione racket, saved three match points in the second set, holding on to secure a win after two hours and 23 minutes of play. Fish reaches his fifth ATP World Tour quarterfinal of the season and his third overall in Los Angeles.
The players pushed the opening set to a tie-break, neither one able to pocket a break of serve. Guccione led early in the tie-break, taking a mini-break advantage at 2-1 and again at 3-2. The Australian collected three set points at 6-3, closing on a backhand winner.
The second set passed without a break of serve, ending in another tie-break. Fish trailed 0-3, but rallied to win four consecutive points. Guccione regrouped to earn his first match point at 6-5. The American fought off the first match point, plus two more to reach 13-12 in the tie-break. Fish converted his fifth set point, leveling the match after a huge forehand forced the Australian into error.
Fish snagged an immediate break of serve in the third set to lead 2-0. The American saved the only break point against him at 4-3, holding comfortably for the remainder of the contest. Fish reached triple match point at 5-4, striking an unreturnable serve to finish the match.
Fish won 79% of his first-service points, completing the match with a total of 11 aces. The American faces Leonardo Mayer in the quarterfinals. The Argentine upset fifth seed Igor Kunitsyn on Thursday, 7-6, 6-7, 6-3.
