  • Davydenko, Ferrero reach Croatia Open quarterfinals

    7/31/09 12:18 AM | Ricky Dimon
Davydenko, Ferrero reach Croatia Open quarterfinals Nikolay Davydenko continues his fine form with an easy straight-set win over Alberto Martin on Thursday. He is joined in the Umag quarters by Juan Carlos Ferrero.

    (1) Nikolay Davydenko d. Alberto Martin 6-2, 6-3

Davydenko, last week's Hamburg champion, had no trouble dispatching Martin in one hour and eight minutes at the Studena Croatia Open on Thursday. Umag's No. 1 seed cruised into the quarterfinals, where he will take on Italian Simone Bolelli, a straight-set winner over countryman Fabio Fognini.

Martin, ranked 100th in the world, was never competitive against an in-form Davydenko. The ninth-ranked Russian lost a mere three points in his first four service games, and his second break of the match finished off set one in style. Davydenko surrendered serve once in the second, but continued to pounce on his opponent's punchless serve and broke twice to prevail without any difficulty.

    (5) Juan Carlos Ferrero d. Potito Starace 1-6, 6-3, 6-2

Ferrero woke up from a dismal first set to take care of Starace in one hour and 53 minutes. Umag's No. 5 seed lost his serve twice in the first set and never could recover because he squandered all four of his break-point chances. Ferrero won barely more than half of his first-serve points and only one of five second-serve points while winning just a single game.

After that, however, Ferrero displayed the form that carried him to a clay-court title in Casablanca earlier this season followed by a semifinal showing at Queen's Club and a quarterfinal finish at Wimbledon. The world No. 36 broke immediately in the second and never looked back. When Starace failed to break in a long game with Ferrero serving at 5-3 in the second, it was all but over. "The Mosquito" lost only three points in four service games during the third set and broke twice to ultimately take the match with ease. Next up for Ferrero is unseeded Maximo Gonzalez, a straight-set winner over Oscar Hernandez.
