Marcos Daniel and Andreas Beck took advantage of the early defeat of the tournament seeds in the lower half of the draw as they advance to the semifinals.
Marcos Daniel def. Florent Serra 6-4, 7-6(1)
In what could be a resurgence of Brazilian tennis, Marcos Daniel moved into Saturday’s semifinal at the Allianz Suisse Open. He is joined in the final four by his countryman Thomaz Bellucci. Daniel got off to a snail’s pace in the opening set. Serra jumped out to a 4-1 lead and had 0-40 on Daniel’s serve to go up a double break. The Frenchman was unable to convert and his game fell apart as a result. Daniel won the next 16 points in a row to be the unlikely winner of the first set. Serra pulled himself together in the beginning of the second set. He secured another early break, gifted it back – then pocketed another break and gave that one back as well. As expected, Daniel rolled through the tiebreak, where he cashed in on Serra’s erratic groundstrokes. Daniel will take on Andreas Beck in the semifinals.
Andreas Beck def. Victor Crivoi 6-4, 7-6(5)
Since neither man is a huge server, their combined 21 break point chances is par for the course. Both sets played similarly, with the two men trading breaks of serve all along the way. Beck secured one more than Crivoi in the opening set, but the level of play was pretty well even. The second set featured 2 more service breaks and the deciding tiebreaker. Beck was just slightly stronger in the breaker to take the straight set victory.
