    Safin outlasts Gulbis to reach Los Angeles quarters Marat Safin advanced to the quarterfinals of the LA Tennis Open on Wednesday, dismissing Ernests Gulbis in three sets. The eighth-seeded Russian is joined by John Isner and Carsten Ball.

    Eighth seed Marat Safin extended his head-to-head lead to 2-0 over Ernests Gulbis late Wednesday afternoon. The 29-year-old booked a place among the final eight after knocking out the 20-year-old Latvian, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4. The Russian came from behind at multiple points during the second-round clash, including a 1-3 deficit in the opening set and 0-2 in the third. After recovering a break of serve in the decider, Safin won four consecutive games to reach 4-2. The Russian saved a break point serving at 5-4, closing out the match in one hour and 45 minutes of play.

    Safin finished the afternoon with 5 aces and 4 double-faults, converting four of 14 break points. He awaits the winner of the Haas-Levine match to be played late Wednesday evening.

    John Isner def. Marcos Bagdatis 6-3, 7-6

    John Isner advanced to the LA Tennis Open quarterfinals after defeating Marcos Baghdatis in straight sets, 6-3, 7-6. The 24-year-old American reaches the quarterfinals for the second consecutive week, having battled into the semifinals of the Indianapolis Tennis Championships (lost to Ginepri). Isner struck 11 aces on the day, snagging the only break of the match in the opening set. The American converted his sixth match-point opportunity at 12-11 in the second set tiebreak, completing the one-hour and 50-minute contest without facing a break point.

    Isner moves on to face Carsten Ball in the quarterfinals. The Australian qualifier came through his second-round match after third seed Dmitry Tursunov retired with a back injury.

    Qualifier Carsten Ball passed through to the quarterfinals Wednesday afternoon. The 22-year-old Australian was leading 6-4, 0-1 when the third-seeded Russian retired with a back injury during the 49th minute of the match.

Isner sprained his ankle at 10-10 in the second-set tiebreaker.

I have heard both back injury and left ankle injury for Tursunov.
