Tommy Haas made quick work of wildcard Jesse Levine in the second round of play at the LA Tennis Open. The German advanced to the quarterfinals in straight sets Thursday evening.
Top seed Tommy Haas secured a comfortable win in the second round of the LA Tennis Open late Thursday, defeating American wildcard Jesse Levine in straight sets. The German did not face a break point en route to posting a 63-minute victory, 6-1, 6-3. Haas extends his lead in the head-to-head series with Levine to 2-0, recording his second hard-court win over the American in a US Open Series event. Haas, an LA Tennis Open champion in 2004 and 2006, moves through to the quarterfinal round for the fourth time.
The top seed earned a quick service break to lead 3-1. Haas pushed his advantage to 5-1, after Levine hit a double-fault on break point. The German closed the set at 6-1 in 26 minutes. Haas finished the opening set winning 93% of his first-service points. Levine struggled throughout first set, making just 35% of his first serves.
Haas secured a break of serve at 2-2 in set two, courtesy of a another double from Levine. The German did not serve particularly well in the second set, putting a poor 38% in play. Haas passed through remainder of the contest, however, closing the 6-3 set after converting his fourth break of the evening.
The top seed completed the match holding eight of 8 service games, winning 91% of the points on first serve. He moves on to face eighth seed Marat Safin in the quarterfinals. The Russian rallied from a set and a break down to knock out Ernests Gulbis Thursday afternoon, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.
