Davydenko begins Croatia Open campaign in style No. 1 seed Nikolay Davydenko takes care of Daniel Gimeno-Traver in the Umag first round on Wednesday. Third-seeded Viktor Troicki is not as fortunate, going down to Maximo Gonzalez in a third-set tiebreaker.

    (1) Nikolay Davydenko d. Daniel Gimeno-Traver 6-2, 6-2

Three days after winning the Hamburg title, Davydenko cruised in his opener at the Studena Croatia Open on Wednesday, easing past Gimeno-Traver in one hour and 16 minutes. The top-seeded Russian never faced a break point in the first set and used two breaks of his own to take a one-set advantage. Gimeno-Traver crippled his own efforts by serving at just 42 percent.

Set two progressed in similar fashion, with Davydenko facing no break points and again capitalizing on two of four break chances. The world No. 9 took control of baseline rallies early and often by putting in 74 percent of his first serves during the second frame of play and pounding his opponent's second deliviers. Davydenko won 11 of 14 second-serve return points (21 of 31 for the match). Next up for Davydenko is another Spaniard, Alberto Martin.

    Maximo Gonzalez vs. (3) Viktor Troicki 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(6)

Gonzalez survived an absolute thriller with Troicki on Wednesday, and he needed two hours and 59 minutes to do so. For a while it looked like Troicki would allow Gonzalez to pull off the upset in much easier fashion. The third-seeded Serb served at just 37 percent in the first set and got broken twice. Gonzalez gave one of the breaks back, but closed out the opening frame of play with a clutch service hold at 5-4.

Roles were reversed in set two, as Troicki improved his serve dramatically and Gonzalez double-faulted five times. Two breaks of serve allowed the world No. 26 to force a decisive third. With momentum in had, Troicki seized a quick break and ended up serving for the match at 5-4. He held two match points, but Gonzalez fought back and eventually capitalized on is 11th break point of the set. Two holds later a tiebreaker was necessary, and the unseeded Argentine saved yet another match point. Gonzalez soon took advantage of his first match point at 7-6 to stun Troicki and set up a second-round meeting with Oscar Hernandez.
