France’s Jeremy Chardy took out Mikhail Youzhny in second round play. Igor Andreev also advanced to the quarterfinals.
Igor Andreev def. Jan Hernych 6-4, 6-1
Russia’s Igor Andreev had an impressive straight set victory over the Czech Republic’s Jan Hernych. Andreev had a few close calls in the first set. The Russian was forced to fight off 3 break points, but he was eventually able to secure a single break of serve to take a set lead. Hernych fell apart in the second set. The Czech won just 1 point on Andreev’s first serves and just 7 points on return for the set. Andreev converted 2 of 5 break points, which gave Hernych a single game to show for his second set efforts.
Jeremy Chardy def. Mikhail Youzhny 6-3, 5-7, 6-3
Mikhail Youzhny was ranked as high as 8 in the world in 2008. The Russian has since slid down the rankings to his current spot at No. 70. His form of late has been dreadful. His last four tournaments all resulted in first round losses and he will now add a second round exit to the string of poor results. Both men had difficulty holding serve. There were a whopping 12 service breaks over the three sets of play. In the end, Youzhny’s serving was inferior to Chardy’s. The Russian gave up 3 service breaks in the first set, and two in both the second and third sets. He only was able to capture the middle set because Chardy briefly served worse than he did.
