  • Wawrinka and Benneteau advance, Mathieu dispatched

Wawrinka and Benneteau advance, Mathieu dispatched Last week’s Hamburg finalist Paul-Henri Mathieu was ousted by Marcos Daniel on Tuesday. Switzerland’s Stanislas Wawrinka and Julien Benneteau of France both advanced.

    Marcos Daniel def. Paul-Henri Mathieu 7-6(3), 7-6(6)

In a tight first round match, Marcos Daniel upset No. 8 seed Paul-Henri Mathieu. Daniel was able to take advantage of a tired Mathieu who advanced to the final just a few days ago in Hamburg (he lost to Nikolay Davydenko in straight sets). Mathieu had difficulty on serve throughout the match. He faced 10 break points in 2 sets. To his credit, the Frenchman was able to fend off all but two (one in each set). Daniel was also broken once in each set. Mathieu’s fatigue caught up with him in the tiebreakers. Daniel will take on Julien Benneteau of France in the second round.

Stanislas Wawrinka def. Federico Del Bonis 6-4, 7-5

Argentina’s Federico Del Bonis gave Stanislas Wawrinka a surprisingly difficult match. Del Bonis is an 18 year old up-and-coming Argentine player who is just making the transition from Futures and Challenger events to the main tour. Wawrinka did not play inspired tennis. His experience and a bout of nerves from Del Bonis allowed the Swiss man to take the match in straight sets. Wawrinka will take on Brazilian qualifier Thomaz Bellucci in the second round.

Julien Benneteau def. Stephane Bohli 7-6(4), 7-5

The high altitude of the tournament in Gstaad greatly benefits a big server like Julien Benneteau. The Frenchman smacked 10 aces in Tuesday’s match against Swiss wildcard Stephane Bohli. The match was not as easy for Benneteau as rankings suggested it would be. Bohli is 145 in the world, Benneteau sits at 58. Bohli managed to serve almost as well as Benneteau – the Swiss man was only broken once in the match at the very tail end of the second set.
