(2) David Ferrer d. Daniel Koellerer 6-1, 6-7(2), 6-4
Ferrer needed two hours and 26 minutes to outlast Koellerer and reach the second round of the Croatia Studena Open on Wednesday night. The second-seeded Spaniard had chance to finish it in much more routine fashion after dominating the first set. Ferrer secured two breaks in the opening frame of play and never faced a break point despite serving at just 40 percent. He soon served for the match at 5-4 in the second.
That's when Koellerer, never one to go away quietly, started to turn things around. The 82nd-ranked Austrian broke to stay alive and eventually foced a tiebreaker, which he took seven points to two. With momentum in had, Koellerer broke serve right away in the third and built a quick 2-0 advantage. Always a fighter himself, Ferrer stormed back and earned a 5-3 lead by breaking at 4-3. Serving for the match a second time, the world No. 20 refused to make the same mistake again.
(6) Nicolas Almagro d. (Q) Marcel Granollers 6-1, 6-3
Ferrer had a much easier day than Ferrer, as he dispatched Granollers, another Spaniard, in a mere one hour and six minutes on Wednesday afternoon. Umag's No. 6 seed eased through the first set with three service breaks and saved all three of the break points he faced against his own serve. Almagro won an amazing eight of nine first-serve return points during the opening frame of play.
More of the same continued at the expense of Granollers' serve in set two. A typical clay-court encounter between two clay-court specialist saw Almagro seize three more breaks. The world No. 35 gave back two of those breaks, but served it out successfully at 5-3. Almagro ended his victory winning 58 percent of his first-serve return points and 67 percent against his opponent's second serve. In round two Almagro will face Croatia's own Ivan Ljubicic, a straight-set winner over wild card Filippo Volandri.
