Sam Querrey and Marcos Baghdatis posted opening-round victories at the LA Tennis Open on Tuesday. Seventh seed Benjamin Becker fell to John Isner in straight sets.
Marcos Baghdatis def. Frank Dancevic 7-6, 6-3
Marcos Baghdatis advanced to the second round of the LA Tennis Open, dismissing Frank Dancevic in straight sets, 7-6, 6-3. The players exchanged breaks of serve in the opening set, but held the rest of the way to contest a tie-break. The Cypriot took control of the tie-break, collecting five set points to reach 6-1. Baghdatis converted his third set point opportunity to win the one-hour and five-minute set. The Cypriot secured an immeidate break of the Canadian’s serve in set two, building a 3-0 lead after consolidating. Baghdatis held five of five service games in the second set, booking a place in the second round in an hour and 41 minutes of play.
Baghdatis finished the day with 11 aces, saving eight of nine break points. He takes on John Isner in the second round.
(6) Sam Querrey def. Denis Istomin 6-2, 6-0
Sixth seed Sam Querrey cruised into the second round late Tuesday, crushing opponent Denis Istomin 6-2, 6-0 in just 46 minutes. After reaching 4-2 in the opening set, the 21-year-old American won eight consecutive games. Querrey converted six of 11 break points on the evening, winning 90% of his first-service points. Istomin held only once during the match, winning just 13% of the points after missing his first serve.
Querrey faces countryman Ryan Sweeting in round two. The 22-year-old qualifier defeated wildcard Taylor Dent in the first round, 6-4, 2-6, 6-3.
John Isner def. (7) Benjamin Becker 7-6, 7-6
John Isner posted his third career win over Benjamin Becker on Tuesday, defeating the seventh-seeded German in two tie-break sets. The American saved a set point at 7-8 in the opening set tie-break, eventually closing it out 10-8 after 55 minutes of play. Isner donated a break of serve in the second set, falling behind 1-3 on a double-fault. The 24-year-old recovered the break of serve midway through the set, bringing the match back to parity at 3-3. Isner fought off a set point at 5-6, crushing an ace to force a second-set tiebreak. After reaching 3-3 in the tie-break, the American won four consecutive points, finishing the match in two hours and five minutes.
Isner completed the match with 15 aces and 92% of the points won on his first serve.
