After a tough opening set, veteran Nicolas Kiefer was able to get past Argentina’s Jose Acasuso.
There are not 127 men on the ATP tour that are better than Nicolas Kiefer – though that is what his ranking suggests is the case. The German has suffered from an altered 2008 schedule. The Toronto Masters – an event in which Kiefer made the final – occurred two weeks earlier last year in order to accommodate the Beijing Olympics. With the points from Toronto taken off, his ranking plummeted.
Jose Acasuso is ranked 48th in the world, but he has had a dreadful 2009 season. The Argentine was able to keep pace with Kiefer for the first set. The two men traded breaks of serve to force a first set tiebreak. Kiefer had trouble getting his first serve in (he served at 51% for the set), but when he was able to, he won 89% of the points. The superior serving allowed him to pocket the first set with 7-5 in the breaker.
The second set was all Kiefer. Whatever effort and energy Acasuso had was drained out of him after the first set loss. Kiefer converted four of six break points and fought off the only two against his own serve. The German will take on Ivan Navarro in the second round.
