Juan Carlos Ferrero kicks off his Croatia Open campaign on Tuesday with a straight-set win over Christophe Rochus. Next up for Umag's No. 5 seed is Potito Starace.
Juan Carlos Ferrero reached the second round of the Studena Croatia Open on Tuesday afternoon, easing past Christophe Rochus 6-2, 6-3 in just one hour and ten minutes. Ferrero is now 4-0 lifetime against Rochus and has never dropped a single set to the Belgian.
Like their three previous encounters, this one was routine for the 2003 French Open champion. Ferrero broke serve twice in the first set and saved both of the break points he faced to consolidate the advantage. Umag's No. 5 seed dictated most of the rallies by serving well and jumping all over his opponent's second deliveries, winning eight of 12 second-serve return points.
Ferrero surrendered serve once during the second frame of play, but more than made up for it by dominating his return games. The former world No. 1 broke three more times as Rochus put in a mere 46 percent of his first serves. Ferrero's fifth break of the match at 5-3 in the second finished it off in style.
The world No. 36, who is the midst of a resurgent 2009 season, finished with six aces and no double-faults. Ferrero won a clay-court title in Casablanca this spring and recently made it to the Queen's Club semifinals and the quarterfinals at Wimbledon. Next up for the 29-year-old Spaniard is Potito Starace, a straight-set winner over lucky loser Grega Zemlja.
