Spain’s Feliciano Lopez suffered another early round loss on Monday, this time to countryman Guillermo Garcia-Lopez.
The fact that Feliciano Lopez does not prefer clay courts is no secret. The Spaniard would rather battle on hard courts or any other surface that allows his big first serve to do the most damage. Countryman Guillermo Garcia-Lopez’s upset victory on Monday was not really much of an upset or a surprise.
The match was not of particularly high quality. The first set featured 3 double faults gifted from the GG Lopez racket and a host of backhand errors from F. Lopez, who could not seem to keep the ball in play. GG Lopez fought off the 2 break points, converted on one to take a set lead.
By the second set, neither man was able to hold serve with any consistency. They traded 2 breaks of serve each to force a tiebreaker. F. Lopez captured the middle set with slightly better serving than his opponent in the tiebreaker. GG Lopez once again demonstrated his penchant for double faulting with another 3 in the second set.
The third set was not much better from either man, though GG Lopez managed to make better inroads on his opponent’s serve. F Lopez served at 45% for the set, which allowed GG Lopez 6 break point chances, though he converted only 2 of them.
Guillermo Garcia-Lopez will meet the winner of Andreas Beck and Marco Chiudinelli in the second round.
