Four Italian ATP players have gone to court in Miami to strike back at what they call unfair sanctions for minor online betting infractions that heave led to separate minor bans and suspensions for each of the quartet.
Giorgio Galimberti, Alessio Di Mauro, Potito Starace and Daniele Bracciali - Starace is the highest-ranked of the quartet at 94th - don't deny wagering small sums on other players' matches.
But their legal team argues that language in the ATP rulebook prohibiting such activity is "terse, vague and ambiguous" and written only in English. In addition, players are not given proper time to read and absorb the implications before signing the consent form.
In addition, the Italians are charging that online betting firm Interwetten, title sponsor of the Kitzbuhel Open, has provided ATP officials with information on bets made online as part of an anti-corruption probe.
The Italians say they have been made scapegoats in a showpiece crackdown over the past several years.
The relationship between online betting houses and men's tennis is a complex one, with the many tournament happy to take sponsor money from the firms. But this month, a German court ruled that an online firm had to drop out as a sponsor of the Hamburg event due to a law giving the government a monopoly over sports betting.
