  • Ginepri beats Isner in Indianapolis semifinals

Ginepri beats Isner in Indianapolis semifinals Robby Ginepri takes out John Isner in straights sets on Saturday to reach the Indianapolis final. Another all-American showdown is on the menu for Ginepri, who will face No. 3 seed Sam Querrey.

The 2005 Indianapolis champion is one win away from adding another title to his collection.

Robby Ginepri defeated John Isner 6-4, 6-3 in the semifinals of the Indianapolis Tennis Championships on Saturday afternoon. Ginepri needed one hour and 26 minutes to reach his second Indianapolis final, in which he will take on No. 3 seed Sam Querrey.

Isner was coming off a grueling semifinal win over Wayne Odesnik that lasted more than two hours and 30 minutes, and it showed against Ginepri. The 6'10'' American was almost no match whatsoever for Ginepri in baseline rallies, so he only kept himself competitive by winning free points with huge first serves. Ginepri, however, returned extremely well--even against his opponent's first deliveries--and that finally paid off at 5-4 in the first set. The first break of the day gave Ginepri the first set and allowed him to begin the second on serve.

A fatigued Isner, ranked one spot below Ginepri at No. 95 in the world, saw his service percentage dip in set two and he continued to win far less than half of his second-serve points. Ginepri's return got better and better as the match progressed and he struck for another service break at 3-2. That was enough to put Ginepri into Sunday's title match, although he had to survive a long service game at 5-3--saving three break points--in order to finish off Isner.

Ginepri, who beat Taylor Dent to win the Indianapolis title four years ago, saved all five of the break points he faced on Saturday.

"I had a lot of ups and downs in the past years," explained the victorious American. "I am still trying to find the form from 2005, but reaching the final here is very encouraging. I still think I can play better than I have played this week I am still not as sharp as 2005 but I'm improving. I am serving really well and this is probably what got me to the final this week."
