Querrey avenges Newport final loss to Ram Sam Querrey defeats Rajeev Ram in straight sets at the Indianapolis Tennis Championships on Thursday evening. Querrey, who lost to Ram earlier this month in Newport, will face Marc Gicquel in the quarterfinals.

Sam Querrey avenged his loss to Rajeev Ram in the Newport final, defeating Ram 7-5, 6-3 in the second round of the Indianapolis Tennis Championships on Thursday. Ram had upset Querrey 6-7(3), 7-5, 6-3 just two weeks ago on the grass courts of Newport to win his first ATP title. But Querrey needed just one hour and eight minutes to return the favor to his fellow American.

Just as they had done in Newport, Querrey and Ram staged a serving contest throughout the first set on Thursday. Neither man could earn a break until Ram served to stay in the opening frame of play at 5-6. That's when Querrey finally struck, capitalizing on his third break point of the match to win the set and give himself the opportunity to start set two on serve. The 6'6'' Querrey won 17 of 19 first-serve points on his way to a one-set advantage.

With momentum in hand, Querrey seized a commanding lead quickly in the second. Ram's serve began to fail him, and Querrey jumped all over his opponent's second serves to break immediately for 2-0. The No. 3 seed led 3-0 before play was suspended due to rain with Ram serving at deuce. The world No. 108 ended up holding that game after the match resumed, but he never could get back on serve; not did he ever get a look at a break point. Querrey closed the match out at 5-3 with a final routine service game.

Querrey finished with 13 aces while winning an impressive 31 of 36 first-serve points. Next up for the No. 3 seed is Marc Gicquel, who has not come close to losing a set yet this week in wins over Ernests Gulbis and Jesse Levine.
