Seeds Paul-Henri Mathieu and Viktor Troicki advanced to the quarterfinals on Thursday. Philipp Kohlschreiber was ousted by qualifier Pablo Cuevas.
Viktor Troicki def. Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 6-7(2), 6-4, 7-6(6)
Guillermo Garcia-Lopez gave Serbia’s Viktor Troicki all he could handle in their third round match. The two men traded breaks of serve in the opening set to force a tiebreak. Troicki wilted in the breaker, where he won just 2 points. The second set was better played by the Serb. He held off Garcia-Lopez on three break points and converted one of his own to level that match at one set each. Neither man did well on serve in the deciding set. They were broken twice each; the match was decided by another tiebreaker. Troicki was able to just edge out the win to advance to the quarters.
Pablo Cuevas def. Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-4, 7-6(8)
In another upset in Hamburg, qualifier Pablo Cuevas of Uruguay took out the No. 8 seed Philipp Kohlschreiber. The German’s return of serve failed him completely. Cuevas, a player who is certainly not known for his booming serve, traversed the match without being broken once. Kohlschreiber had 4 chances(3 in the first set, 1 in the second), but he was unable to convert. Cuevas snagged the only service break of the match in the first set and he was just able to squeak out the win in the second set tiebreaker. Cuevas will take on Nicolas Almagro in the quarters.
Paul-Henri Mathieu def. Daniel Brands 7-5, 7-5
In a close match, France’s Paul-Henri Mathieu took out Daniel Brands of Germany in straight sets. Brands acquitted himself well for most of the match. The first set was decided with a single service break at the tail-end of the set. Brands only poor service game of the set came as he was attempting to send the match to a tiebreak. Brands and Mathieu traded breaks of serve early in the second set, but the German was once again unable to hold his nerve as a tiebreaker loomed closer. Mathieu will take on Viktor Troicki in the quarterfinals.
