No. 1 seed Dmitry Tursunov survives a back-and-forth battle against Michael Berrer at the Indianapolis Tennis Championships on Tuesday night. Robby Ginepri joined Tursunov in round two with a three-set win over Sebastien De Chaunac.
(1) Dmitry Tursunov d. Michael Berrer 6-3, 2-6, 6-0
In a bizarre first-round encounter at the Indianapolis Tennis Championships on Tuesday night, Tursunov defeated Berrer in one hour and 36 minutes. It featured several drastic momentum shifts, and it was Tursunov who seized an early advantage. The top-seeded Russian used one break of serve and won 88 percent of his first-serve points to take the first set without much difficulty.
That's when things really got crazy. Tursunov sprinted to a 2-0 lead in the second before suddenly collapsing. Berrer won six straight games--breaking three times while winning eight of 11 second-serve return points--to force a decisive third. Then it was the 111th-ranked German's turn to completely lose his way. Tursunov promptly returned the favor by winning six consecutive games of his own, breezing through the final frame of play without dropping a single game. Either Taylor Dent or Marcos Daniel will meet the world No. 27 in round two.
Robby Ginepri d. (Q) Sebastien De Chaunac 7-5, 5-7, 6-2
Ginepri needed one hour and 55 minutes to get past De Chaunac and reach the Indianapolis second round late on Tuesday night. A competitive first set saw both men hold serve comfortably most of the way. Ginepri won 18 of 19 first-serve points and lost a total of only five points in his first six service games, but he did have to save one break point en route to 5-5. The 95th-ranked American had been woeful against De Chaunac's serve, but suddenly struck for a critical break to put the set on his racket at 6-5. Ginepri finished off the opening frame of play with another routine service game.
Both players had chances early in the second; De Chaunac missed a huge opportunity to get back in the match by squandering four break points at 1-0, then Ginepri failed to capitalize on a break point at 1-1. Again things progressed to 5-5 after De Chaunac gave back a break midway through the set. This time, however, it was the world No. 177's turn to break at 5-5 and serve out the set. De Chaunac did just that to force a decisive third frame of play.
Ginepri woke up for the final set and immediately took control of the proceedings, breaking for a quick 1-0 advantage. From there the 2005 Indianapolis champion never looked back, breaking a second time before finishing off De Chauanc with a love service hold. Ginepri, who lost only one point on serve in the third set, will face Eduardo Schwank for a spot in the quarterfinals.

So... I'm confused. Did Ginepri beat Sebastien De Chaunac, or Denis Istomin? The report says Istomin, but it says De Chaunac everywhere else.
De Chaunac is one of those low-ranked players that I've actually been following. It's a shame he couldn't keep his momentum going in the 3rd set.
