John Isner wins his opener at the Indianapolis Tennis Championships on Monday evening, defeating Josselin Ouanna in straight sets. Isner is joined in the second round by Marc Gicquel, who clobbered Ernests Gulbis.
John Isner d. Josselin Ouanna 6-1, 7-6(6)
Isner beat Ouanna in a crisp one hour and 10 minutes to reach the second round of the Indianapolis Tennis Championships on Monday. The world No. 96 was in control the entire way but still put the fans through a nail-biting second set. Isner came out on fire, breaking in the second and fourth games of the match en route to a commanding 5-0 lead. Ouanna finally got on the scoreboard with a relatively meaningless service hold for 1-5, but Isner closed out the opening frame of play with a fourth straight routine service hold. The 6'10'' American lost a mere two points on serve in the first set and won all 12 of his first-serve points.
Ouanna started to get settled into the match early in the second, but ran into serious trouble on serve at 2-2. Isner had three break points to seize complete command of the proceedings but missed out on the huge opportunity. Both men held serve the rest of the way to a tiebreaker, although was always far more competitive in his return games than Ouanna. Isner went up a quick mini-break in the decider and eventually sprinted to a 6-2 lead, earning four match points. The 110th-ranked Frenchman, however, was not done yet. Ouanna saved on match point on serve for 3-6, suddenly won two return points for 5-6, and saved another to tie it all up. At 6-6, however, Ouanna double-faulted and Isner finished him off with a big first serve on match point number five.
In round two Isner will meet No. 8 seed Denis Istomin, a three-set winner over Kevin Kim.
(7) Marc Gicquel d. Ernests Gulbis 6-2, 6-3
Gicquel needed exactly one hour to destroy a reeling Gulbis in straight sets on Monday afternoon. Gulbis was never competitive, as his first-serve percentage let him down right from the start. The 20-year-old Latvian surrendered serve at 1-1 in the first set and again at 2-4. With a double-break advantage, Gicquel promptly served out the opening frame of play at love.
The 32-year-old Frenchman never looked back in set two. He lost only four points in four service games and added two more breaks to win the match with ease. A double-fault by Gulbis on break point gave Gicquel a quick 1-0 lead in the second and his fourth break of the proceedings at 5-3 finished it off in style. Next up for the No. 7 seed is a second-round encounter against either Danai Udomchoke or a qualifier. Gulbis, in dismal form all season, drops to 11-18 for his 2009 campaign.
