Lleyton Hewitt may well avoid the swimming pool at the luxury players' resort at the Hopman Cup in Perth after dimming Australian chances in the competition seven months ago due to an ear infection picked up at the inviting venue.
With his return confirmed to the eight-nation mixed team event which will mark the start of the 2010 tennis year, the Australian will likely give the pool where he picked up his problem a wide berth.
The No. 42 will team with Samantha Stosur after playing this year with Casey Dellacqua, his ear infection scuppering any home title hopes at the ITF-sanctioned tournament.
It's been a sad showing for the host nation after 21 editions, with Australia claiming only the 1999 event with Mark Philippoussis and Jelena Dokic.
But Hewitt's form has come of age after he grooved his shots in recent months after making a complete recovery form last summer's hip operation. His Wimbledon quarter-final against Andy Roddick one of the talking points of the grass fortnight.

Today is 1 Sept 09 in Aust. I was reading the latest on Hewy, the family, in the Bahamas. I am disgusted at the details. The worst imaginable again but with LLeyt right next door. I cannot digest it. So I trust he will leave the just indescribable to their locals and return to a good normal living for their sake..

if his ear becomes any worse he can always get a shot for it. i developed an infection similar perhaps from swimming too much in the pools or out at the rivers where we'd canoe and camp. after a relaxing shower sometimes i would try and use the 'aqua ear' but it burns like nothing. reminds me of when a house i rented to a friend where our Riverheart Shops are situated, that also connected to a mower shop burnt down when a mate was renting it. he survived though. there are good eardrops for this which have worked for me although it can become worse while smoking. so i've quit that too....
