In the opening day of play, Andreas Seppi of Italy was beaten soundly by Teimuraz Gabashvili. Seppi’s countryman Potito Starace advanced.
Teimuraz Gabashvili def. Andreas Seppi 6-3, 6-1
Monday’s match between Russia’s Teimuraz Gabashvili and Andreas Seppi was all about missed opportunities. Specifically, Seppi’s missed opportunities. The Italian had a staggering 12 break point chances for the match. But an even more important statistic is that he did not convert a single one of them. Gabashvili traversed both sets – 7 break points in the first set, 5 in the second – without being broken. To add to Seppi’s difficulties, the Italian did not serve well throughout the match. Gabashvili will meet Viktor Troicki in the second round.
Potito Starace def. Maximo Gonzalez 5-7, 6-4, 6-3
The first set of this opening round match featured a flurry of service breaks. Starace clearly had a difficult time getting in gear for the match. The Italian faced 3 break points – and surrendered all 3. Gonzalez did not fare much better. The Argentine gave up 2 breaks of serve, which was still enough to win him the first set. Starace pulled himself together more in the second. Starace was once again able to take 2 of Gonzalez’s service games, and he was broken only once on his own serve. The third set played similarly to the second. Gonzalez was broken twice, Starace once (early in the set) to give the Italian the first round win.
