Juan Monaco def. Mikhail Youzhny 7-6, 6-3
Juan Monaco survived a tricky opponent in Mikhail Youzhny early Tuesday, prevailing in straight sets to earn a place in the second round of the German Open. The Swedish Open finalist needed an hour and 52 minutes to dismiss the Russian, 7-6, 6-3. Monaco converted five of 11 points on the afternoon, taking full advantage of a poor second-service percentage from Youzhny. Although the Russian collected three breaks of serve, he managed to win just 27% of the points after missing his first serve.
Monaco moves to 26-17 on the season and will face countryman and 12th seed Jose Acasuso in the second round.
Julien Benneteau def. Juan Ignacio Chela 6-4, 1-6, 6-1
Julien Benneteau overcame a tough second set in his first-round match against Juan Ignacio Chela on Tuesday, holding on to defeat the Argentine, 6-4, 1-6, 6-1. With the victory, the Frenchman extends his lead to a perfect 3-0 in the head-to-head series. Despite losing serve three times in the second set, Benneteau recovered to break the Chela serve twice in the third without facing a break point. The 27-year-old played the important points well, cashing in on six of seven break-point opportunities during the one-hour and 46-minute contest. Benneteau finished the afternoon with four aces, winning 65% of his first-service points.
Benneteau will take on seventh seed Igor Andreev in round two. The Frenchman is 1-1 lifetime against the Russian.
(WC) Florian Mayer def. Rainer Schuettler 6-7, 6-3, 6-3
Wildcard recipient Florian Mayer pocketed his first career win over compatriot Rainer Schuettler on Tuesday, closing the head-to-head deficit at 1-2. The 25-year-old German rallied from a set down to notch the opening-round victory after two hours and 20 minutes of play, 6-7, 6-3, 6-3. Mayer, converting five of 13 break point chances in total, secured a key break of the Schuettler serve at 3-3 in the third set to advance to the second round. He completed the match snagging a solid 78% of his points on first serve.
With the victory over Schuettler, the 150th-ranked Mayer captures just his second ATP World Tour-level match of the season. He meets sixth seed David Ferrer of Spain in round two.
