  • Injured Roddick jolts Indianapolis with late pullout

    7/19/09 12:04 AM | Johan Lindahl
Injured Roddick jolts Indianapolis with late pullout The US Open Series will have to start without Andy Roddick after the American pulled out of the Indianapolis Championships at late notice with the hip injury which bothered him at Wimbledon.

The losing finalist at the All England club got his coach Larry Stefanki on the telephone to deliver the harsh news to organisers, who now have to market Dmitry Tursunov as top seed.

Roddick has now twice delayed his return to tennis after pulling out of last weekend's Davis Cup quarter-final against Croatia with disastrous results for the Americans.

But besides his physical damage, one-time No. 1 Roddick is also likely still nursing the mental scars from his third Wimbledon final defeat by Federer, now history's best with 15 Grand Slam singles titles.

Roddick has given no indication of when he will be mentally and physically to re-joining the tennis wars, with the Indianapolis event marking the start of the summer run-up to US Open, which begins August 31.

The absence gave compatriot Robby Ginepri a place in the 32-man main draw, with the 2005 champion hoping to find some form after a bout of appendicitis early in 2009.

Top seed Tursunov won the event in 2007 and lost the final a year ago to Frenchman Gilles Simon, who is not returning to defend his title.

from the man roddick himself on twitter:

just wanted to make sure i gave myself every oppurtunity to be ready... i wish i could predict on how something would react.

i am sorry you are upset with me, but i waited because i wanted to give myself a shot to play.. would you have rather had me given up on the idea of playing a week ago? how does that help anybody involved?

sheila - the answer is obvious - johan. Nothing original - ever.

cut them some slack guys, if you think you'd do it any better go ahead and apply for a job.
But yeah, I don't think Roddick's mental scars have anything to do with his pulling out... he'd want to get as many matches under his belt to get over the loss at Wimby

"the hip injury which bothered him at Wimbledon."

Hmm... yes, Mr. Lindahl DOES seem incapable of hiding his true colors...
