Jeremy Chardy of France will compete in his second ATP final on Sunday at the Mercedes Cup after defeating Nicolas Kiefer. Victor Hanescu also won his semifinal match.
Jeremy Chardy def. Nicolas Kiefer 6-3, 7-5
Both Jeremy Chardy of France and Germany’s Nicolas Kiefer performed double duty on Saturday. The two men were forced to contest their quarterfinal and semifinal matches due to rain earlier in Stuttgart. Chardy had the more difficult of the two matches. He was taken to a tiebreaker in the first set by German Mischa Zverev, before winning the second 6-1. Kiefer won his quarterfinal 6-2, 6-1. Fatigue did not seem to play a part in the semi, however. Chardy earned 12 break points on Kiefer, converted 3 – and he only surrendered 1 break of serve for entrance to the final.
Victor Hanescu def. Fabio Fognini 6-3, 6-7(4), 6-2
In what was by some margin the better of the two semifinals, Victor Hanescu of Romania defeated Italy’s Fabio Fognini. Hanescu secured the first set, though he did so with some difficulty on his own serve. The beginning of the set was marked with service breaks for both men. Hanescu was broken twice, Fognini three times. The Romanian managed to pull himself together late in the set to tuck away the lead. The second set was more of the same as the two men traded 2 more breaks of serve each. Fognini proved stronger in the tiebreak as the Italian leveled the match at one set all. Hanescu finally found his service game in the third set. The Romanian faced no break points to take the final set 6-2.
