Tommy Robredo destroys Teimuraz Gabashvili in straight sets to reach the Bastad semifinals on Friday. He is joined in the last four by Swedes Robin Soderling and Andreas Vinciguerra.
(3) Tommy Robredo d. Teimuraz Gabashvili 6-4, 6-0
Robredo was in control the entire way against Gabashvili on Friday afternoon, booking his place in the semifinals of the Catella Swedish Open after one hour and 17 minutes. Gabashvili at least managed to stay somewhat close in the first set, mainly because he saved seven of nine break points and because Robredo served at just 44 percent. The second frame of play, however, could not have been easier for Robredo. The 16th-ranked Spaniard lost only nine points and won every single return point in which his opponent had to toss in a second serve. Robredo, who dropped a mere three points in his last three service games, will take on Juan Monaco in Saturday's semifinals.
(2) Robin Soderling d. (5) Nicolas Almagro 7-5, 6-3
Soderling had defeated Almagro in straight sets in the Wimbledon third round just a few weeks ago, and he did the same on Friday to the delight of the Swedish crowd. The 12th-ranked Swede dispatched Almagro in the Bastad quarterfinals after one hour and 14 minutes. Soderling surged to a 3-0 lead in the first set before Almagro ran off three straight games of his own for 3-3. The two players then took care of serve until Almagro attempted to stay in the set at 5-6. A dismal service game ended with a failed drop-shot as the Spaniard all but handed the opening frame of play to his opponent. Soderling never faced a break point during the second frame of play and he took complete command with a break at 4-3. The No. 2 seed promptly served out the proceedings in routine fashion to set up an all-Swede semifinal showdown against a resurgent Andreas Vinciguerra.
(WC) Andreas Vinciguerra d. (4) Jurgen Melzer 2-6, 6-4, 6-3
Vinciguerra continued his dream run in his native land on Friday by defeating Melzer--his doubles partner--in one hour and 45 minutes. Melzer, a considerable favorite in this match, took care of business throughout the opening frame of play. The 28th-ranked Austrian never dropped serve--saving one break point--and broke twice, including at 5-2 to finish off the set in style. Vinciguerra quickly got back on track, however, and began to control baseline rallies. The world No. 460, who has been injured throughout his career and obviously needed a wild card to get into the main draw, won nine of 10 second-serve points in set two and used one break to force a decisive third. From there Vinciguerra never looked back. After both players held serve comfortably to 3-3, Melzer won just a single point the rest of the way. Vinciguerra broke to love for 4-3 and broke to 15 to close it out, finishing off Melzer with a scorching backhand pass.
