Juan Monaco and Andreas Vinciguerra reach the Bastad quarterfinals on Thursday. They defeat Victor Crivoi and Guillermo Canas, respectively.
Juan Monaco d. Victor Crivoi 6-0, 7-6(1)
Monaco booked his spot in the quarterfinals of the Catella Swedish Open on Thursday night by dispatching Crivoi in one hour and 28 minutes. While it almost lasted a lot longer, for a while it looked like Monaco would finish it in lightning-quick fashion. The 61st-ranked Argentine lost only fourteen points--and just four on serve--in the first set, refusing to allow Crivoi even a single game.
Monaco had plenty of chances to do similar damage in set two, but he squandered nine consecutive break-point opportunities. Crivoi saw no break points against his opponent's serve until he suddenly earned two with Monaco serving at 5-6. After saving one set point, Monaco fired a forehand that was called wide. The mark, however, was in and with new life Monaco saved yet another set point. Two points later a tiebreaker was necessary to decide things, and the favorite dominated it seven points to one. Monaco will take on No. 1 seed Fernando Verdasco for a spot in the semifinals.
(WC) Andreas Vinciguerra d. (Q) Guillermo Canas 6-7(5), 6-3, 6-4
Vinciguerra treated the Swedish crowd to huge victory over Canas in the Bastad second round after two hours and 42 minutes of spririted baseline play. Neither man could break serve in the first set, which Canas eventually took seven points to five in a tiebreaker. A more aggressive Vinciguerra began to dictate play and take control in the second set, winning it with a single break of serve. The 28-year old Swede lost the momentum by surrendering serve early in the final set, but it was only a minor hiccup for the crowd favorite. Vinciguerra responded with two breaks of his own and closed out the proceedings with a routine service hold at 5-4.
This is, of course, Vinciguerra's first appearance in the quarterfinals of an ATP event this season. The world No. 460, who has been injured throughout a once-promising career, headed into this week with a mere 1-4 match record at the ATP level for his 2009 campaign. After a getting a wild card into the main draw, Vinciguerra was too consistent for Florent Serra and round one and had too much weaponry from the baseline on Thursday for Canas, the 31-year-old Argentine. Next up for Vinciguerra is a clash with doubles partner Jurgen Melzer.
