Mischa Zverev recorded his second win in a row over top-seeded Gilles Simon at the Mercedes Cup Thursday evening. The German advances to the quarterfinals.
Mischa Zverev turned in a near-flawless performance during his second-round clash with Gilles Simon on Thursday. The hometown talent held all of his service games to reach the Mercedes Cup quarterfinals in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2. Zverev extends his lead to 2-0 in the head-to-head series with the Frenchman, having defeated the world No. 7 earlier this year in Rome.
Zverev secured his first break of the match to lead 2-1, following an errant backhand from Simon. The German fought his way out of trouble serving for the opening set at 5-4, saving two break points. Zverev recovered to earn a set point, closing 6-4 after crushing an unreturnable serve.
The second set began in identical fashion as the first, Zverev jumping out to a 2-1 break advantage on a wild ground stroke error from the top seed. Simon, offering little resistance to the Zverev offensive attack, surrendered serve once more to fall behind 1-4. The German held strong for the remainder of the match, collecting a trio of match points at 5-2. Zverev finished the match with a forehand winner, securing a spot in the quarterfinals.
Zverev completed the 66-minute match winning 85% of his first-service points while converting five of eight break-point opportunities. He moves on to face Jeremy Chardy in the quarterfinals.
The Frenchman rallied from a set down to defeat Argentine Martin Vassallo Arguello, 2-6, 6-3, 6-1.
