Nikolay Davydenko was nearly sent packing by Ivan Navarro in the first round of Stuttgart.
The transition from grass back to red clay was not smooth for Russia’s Nikolay Davydenko. The tournament No. 2 seed got in trouble early in the set. Ivan Navarro of Spain, who is ranked 104 in the world, managed to gain 2 breaks on Davydenko out of 5 break point opportunities. The Russian had 5 break point chances as well, but he was only able to convert one.
Davydenko continued to struggle into the second set. Navarro once again went up an early break. The Russian appeared headed for a straight set defeat as Navarro held to go up 4-2. Davydenko won his next service game for 3-4, but he was still down a break. The Russian made his move in Navarro’s next service game. A shaky game allowed Davydenko to earn the break back, then another break at 6-5 gave the Russian the set.
With the momentum of the match firmly in his corner, Davydenko rolled through the third set for the come-from-behind victory.
