Guillermo Canas defeats Grigor Dimitrov in straight sets to reach the Bastad second round on Tuesday afternoon. Next up for Canas is veteran Swede Andreas Vinciguerra.
Veteran guile proved to be too much for youth and talent on Tuesday afternoon in Bastad. Guillermo Canas, 31, defeated Grigor Dimitrov, 18, in straight sets to book his place in the second round of the Catella Swedish Open. It took Canas one hour and 43 minutes to complete his 6-3, 7-6(2) victory.
Canas could have finished off Dimitrov in much quicker fashion, as he was in control of the match almost the entire way. The Argentine completely dominated set one, using two breaks--including one at 5-3--to give himself a comfortable cushion. Canas lost a mere two points--and none when he put his first serve in play--in his first four service games.
Dimitrov finally stated to get settled into the match when he suddenly broke serve for the first time at 1-1 in set two. Unable to sustain the momentum, however, the up-and-coming Bulgarian promptly lost four straight games. Dimitrov then went down three match points while serving at 2-5, but he saved all of them and held. With Canas' service percentage plummeting, Dimitrov broke a second time to stay in the match and held serve again to even things up at 5-5. Nonetheless, Canas' experience and consistency were too much for Dimitrov to handle in the end. The world No. 151 eased through the second-set tiebreaker seven points to two, closing out the proceedings with little difficulty.
Always comfortable on clay, Canas took advantage of playing the talented youngster on the slow stuff. The qualifier ran all over the place and constantly retrieved balls that would have been winners for Dimitrov on faster surfaces. Often having to play one or two shots more than expected, Dimitrov saw his forehand break down at the end of long rallies. The gritty Canas overcame woeful serving (40 percent) thanks to a stellar baseline performance.
Canas will face a different kind of opponent in Andreas Vinciguerra when the two veterans meet for a place in the Bastad quarterfinals. Vinciguerra, 28, upset Florent Serra in three sets on Monday.

thought Dimitrov would have too much game for Canas, but Canas too good on clay

Do you think Dmitrov is built for HC? I've watched him play and can tell he has promise but I'm not sure what his strengths are besides youth and energy--lol.
