  • Borg likes the look of future champion Murray

    7/14/09 9:37 PM | Johan Lindahl
Borg likes the look of future champion Murray Björn Borg never seems to be short of an opinion, with the five-time Wimbledon winner stating the obvious when he tips Andy Murray as a force for the future.

Sweden's five-time Wimbledon champion didn't go too far out on a limb when the told ATP's Champions Tour that the 22-year-old Scot would one day win Wimbledon in addition to topping the rankings. "I believe he is going to come back to Wimbledon next year and be even more ready," said the Swede of losing semi-finalist Murray.

"Before Wimbledon this year I had picked Murray to win. The semi against (Andy) Roddick could have gone either way. He was a little bit unlucky, I actually thought he played a great Wimbledon with all the pressure he had."

Borg was speaking to highlight his own participation in a new senior event in November to be played in Chengdu, China. Also in the field: John McEnroe and Michael Chang.

Borg predicts that Murray will own a Grand Slam by June of next year. "If he’s not going to do it this year (US Open, which Roger Federer has won for the past five years), he has a very good chance next year to win Grand Slam titles.

"He’s going to be up there fighting with (Rafael) Nadal and Federer from now on and one day I think he might be the number one player in the world."

...We all know Borg changes his mind a lot. I still admire the guy but he is...loopy. I was just watching him play Conners today....
Back on topic, well more so, his being weird was to imply he always says good things and finds a way to take them back if he is gonna be wrong. Geez, it might be a curse for poor Murray to hear this.

More importantly, doesn't everyone think Murray is gonna win a slam? =P I mean Borg here is not saying anything new.

Seriously. Although Borg saying "I think Murray will be No. 1 at some point" is even funnier. I mean Murray has already been close to No. 1!

Actually, yes that is far funnier. Good point. I wouldn't be in the least surprised if he is the next guy to be No.1. (Especially, god for bid, if Nadal has a slow start with his mini-comeback.)

Borg doesn't like to make predictions. Actually, I don't think he likes talking to reporters at all. But every time he visits a tournament journalists are asking him tons of questions like "who do you think will win", "what do you think about X", "do you think Y will become the world number one", and so on.

And since Björn is a nice guy who doesn't want to disrespect anyone, pretty much everyone is a winner :)

Agree with Borg, Murray just needs a lil bit of fine-tuning... Some power in those forehands and a better second-serve and some killer instinct and No.1 he will be...

Good point, Einar. It's looking like a slow news week out there. Much more fun to be had if he says he thinks Murray, or whoever he's being quizzed about on a given day, doesn't have what it takes.

Next up: I'm really going for my shots, coming to the net a bit more, trying to be aggressive, dog bites man.
