Todd Woodbridge follows in the footsteps of Wally Masur and Darren Cahill as he takes over as coach of the Australian Davis Cup squad, working with captain John Fitzgerald to try and bring along the next generation of post-Lleyton Hewitt talent.
The former doubles great, 38, has been appointed a full-time coach for Davis Cup and Tennis Australia, overseeing men's player development.
"It goes way beyond the Davis Cup and allows me to work with top players and coaches at various levels of their development", said Woody, who earned nine Wimbledon doubles titles with partners Mark Woodforde and Jonas Björkman during his career on court.
"We have some terrific talent in both the playing and coaching ranks and a recently improved structure that I believe can help us drive some big improvements in Australian tennis performance".
Woodbridge said the job appealed "because of the breadth of the scope and the chance to make a difference", said Woodbridge, who played on Davis Cup-champion sides in 1999 and 2003.
Australia stand second behind the US with 28 Davis Cup trophys, but were demoted from the elite World Group in 2008.
Hewitt, 28, who has been reviving his career this year with a second clay title in a decade and a Wimbledon quarter-final place, is currently the only player Australia can count on for Davis Cup after the generation behind him failed to lift to elite level.
