Both of the seeded players in action on Day 1 of the Catella Swedish Open are bounced from the tournament. Florent Serra falls to veteran Swede Andreas Vinciguerra and Christophe Rochus falls to Teimuraz Gabashvili.
Andreas Vinciguerra d. (6) Florent Serra 6-7(5), 6-3, 6-4
Vinciguerra kicked off the Bastad event in ideal fashion for Swedish fans, upsetting Serra in three sets after two hours and 25 minutes. The oft-injured Swede is ranked 460th in the world mostly due to inactivity, but he was the far more consistent player on Monday. Serra had plenty of chances, but the veteran Frenchman converted a dismal one of 16 break-point opportunities. His lone break allowed him to get back on serve late in the first set and eventually took the opening frame of play in a tiebreaker. Throughout the final two sets, however, Vinciguerra used heavy topspin and played with a large margin of error while Serra's groundstrokes broke down off both wings. Vinciguerra secured a break midway through each of the last two sets and made the leads stand up by saving four break points in the second and two more in the third. A rare routine service hold at 5-4 in the third set put an ecstatic Vinciguerra into the second round, where he will face either qualifier Guillermo Canas or wild card Grigor Dimitrov.
Teimuraz Gabashvili d. (7) Christophe Rochus 4-6, 6-1, 6-0
A somewhat bizzare match saw Gabashvili lose the first set against Rochus before absolutely destroying the No. 7 seed in sets two and three. Gabashvili was dreadful on serve throughout the opening frame of play, getting broken three times. The Russian broke back twice, but it was not enough. Nonetheless, Gabashvili had more than enough to ease past Rochus the rest of the way. Rochus was slightly more competitive in the second set than the 6-1 score suggests, but he was hopeless in the third. The 5'7'' Belgian won a mere nine points (to Gabashvili's 26) over the last six games of the match (all of which were won by Gabashvili). Next up for the world No. 75 is either Bjorn Phau or Swedish wild card Daniel Berta.
In qualifying action on Monday, well-known veterans Canas and Potito Starace took care of business and booked spots in the main draw. Canas will meet wild card Grigor Dimitrov on Tuesday while Starace will do battle against Julien Benneteau.
