Beaten Russia has complained that scheduling the Davis Cup during the week after Wimbledon is a recipe for disaster, as demonstrated by the big names missing from the competition at the weekend.
Out of the mix were Wimbledon finalist Andy Roddick, Spain's injured No. 2 Rafael Nadal, Argentine David Nalbandian (recovering from hip surgery) Germany's Tommy Haas and Croatia's Ivan Ljubicic.
The Russians were unable to field No. 11 Nikolay Davydenko and Dmitry Tursunov, who withdrew with an ankle injury he's suffered with for weeks.
"The main problem is this murderous calendar", Shamil Tarpischev, head of the Russian federation told local media after the two-time championship side lost 4-1 to Israel in Tel Aviv.
"This is not only a big problem for us - just look at the other top teams like the US, Spain, Argentina or Germany".
"Every top team was missing their best players. This scheduling gives smaller teams an unfair advantage. That's why there were so many upsets".
Defending champion Spain went through to the semi-finals thanks only to final-rubber heroics from Juan Carlos Ferreroo. But the US and three-time finalist Argentina were both dumped out.
