Davis Cup Cinderella side Israel were hoping to face Germany at home in September after reaching a first-ever semi-final in the competition with an upset of two-time champion Russia in Tel Aviv.
"I hope that Germany will win so that we can play at home again, everything is possible when we play at home", said Israeli captain Eyal Ran. The Germans are fighting in Marbella to get past Spain in their quarter-final.
"I actually can't describe how I feel... I am so proud to be an Israeli today, to be a part of this team, so proud to be part of this sport and Davis Cup tennis, it was a classic tie", added the skipper.
Israel clinched the tie with a doubles victory to sweep away Russia, where Marat Safin was playing in his last Davis Cup tie before retirement at the end of the season.
Doubles player Andy Ram was left speechless by his team's accomplishment. "For the first time I have absolutely nothing to say. Usually I just can't stop talking and I started to cry like a little boy".
Israel has bucked the odds throughout this season, playing a first-round tie in Malmo, Sweden, behind closed doors due to security concerns following Israel bombing raids in the Middle East which sparked world outrage.
"After we won in Sweden, I told myself I have to be here, not only in good shape, but in great shape", said Jonathan Erlich, off the court from August until May with an elbow injury."I'm very, very happy I could achieve that and perform today like I was never (out injured)".
