Ferrero saves Spain in Davis Cup quarterfinals Former World No. 1 Juan Carlos Ferrero helped defending champion Spain advance to the semifinal round of Davis Cup after defeating Andreas Beck on Sunday. Spain captures the tie with Germany, 3-2.

    Philipp Kohlschreiber def. Fernando Verdasco 6-4, 6-2, 1-6, 2-6, 8-6

Philipp Kohlschreiber narrowly avoided defeat in the first singles rubber on Sunday, prevailing in five, hard-fought sets over Fernando Verdasco, 6-4, 6-2, 1-6, 2-6, 8-6. The 25-year-old saved his team from elimination, as Germany headed into day 3 trailing host nation and defending champion Spain 1-2. Kohlschreiber surrendered a two-sets-to-love lead before securing the match 8-6 in the deciding fifth-set, leveling the tie at two points apiece after nearly four hours of play. The German moves to 4-3 lifetime against the 9th-ranked Spaniard.

Kohlschreiber pocketed his second victory of the weekend, following his straight-sets dismissal of Tommy Robredo on Friday, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4.

Juan Carlos Ferrero def. Andreas Beck 6-4, 6-4, 6-4

Juan Carlos Ferrero, a last-minute substitution for teammate Tommy Robredo, collected the winning point for Spain after knocking out Andreas Beck in straight sets late Sunday. The 29-year-old veteran played near-flawless tennis over the course of two hours and 26 minutes to snag a victory for the 2008 Davis Cup champions, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4.

Ferrero led for the duration of the singles rubber, converting six of 10 break point chances while capturing a solid 94% of his points on second serve.

Spain reaches the final four, set to battle Israel in the semifinals. Israel upset two-time Davis Cup champion Russia 4-1 early Sunday.

Yes, way to go for the older generation. One of my favorite players, glad to hear he isn't a fizzle and quit like Safin. May not have the same skill but definately a far better player it terms of mental game. So odd to think he hadn't won a title in so long just at the beginning of the clay court season.

JCF has been playing better lately like Haas. I just hope these guys give the young guns some competition AGAIN to make things more exciting for tennis!

Man, Verdasco is so streaky. He has some of the most up-and-down scorelines I've ever seen. I'd love to see him take his tennis to that proverbial "next level," though. He's fun to watch.
