Fernando Verdasco takes on Philipp Kohlschreiber during the first singles rubber of the day on Sunday. Defending champion Spain leads Germany by a point heading into the third day of Davis Cup quarterfinal-round play.
Fernando Verdasco vs. Philipp Kohlschreiber
Verdasco and Kohlschreiber have battled six times in total, each player capturing a trio of victories apiece. The pair clashed twice in 2009, both matches going the way of the Spaniard. The 25-year-old Madrid native knocked out the 25-year-old German in three sets at the Masters Series Indian Wells and in straight sets at the Masters Series Monte Carlo. Kohlschreiber recorded his last win over Verdasco at the 2008 tournament in Vienna.
Verdasco collected the opening point for Spain on Friday, fighting his way through a tough singles rubber with Andreas Beck. The Spaniard rallied from a two-sets-to-one deficit, hanging on to snag a win in five, 6-0, 3-6, 6-7, 6-2, 6-2. Kohlschreiber pulled Germany back into contention, besting Tommy Robredo comfortably in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4.
The World No. 9 earned a second point for Spain Saturday afternoon, partnering with frequent doubles teammate Feliciano Lopez. The two dismissed the German doubles combo of Nicolas Kiefer and Mischa Zverev in four sets.
Tommy Robredo vs. Andreas Beck (if necessary)
Should the tie go the distance, World No. 14 Tommy Robredo will face the 51st-ranked Andreas Beck for the last match of quarterfinals competition. The two players have never met.
