  • Del Potro evens score after Berdych edges Monaco

Del Potro evens score after Berdych edges Monaco Juan Martin Del Potro crushes Ivo Minar to pull Argentina even with the Czech Republic on Friday in Davis Cup quarterfinal action. Earlier in the day, Tomas Berdych survived Juan Monaco in five sets.

    Tomas Berdych d. Juan Monaco 6-4, 2-6, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2

Despite having a surface advantage on indoor hard courts and a home-court edge with the Czech fans behind him, Berdych had all he could handle in Monaco. He had to come back from two sets to one down to outlast Monaco in three hours and 27 minutes. With the thrilling win, Berdych gave the host Czech Republic a 1-0 lead over Argentina in the Davis Cup quarterfinals.

After winning the first set, errors and double-faults infested Berdych's game and he dropped sets two and three in routine fashion. Just as suddenly as his game had fallen apart, however, Berdych got it all back together over the final two sets. He caught with both his serve and groundstrokes and his power overwhelmed Monaco--who prefers clay courts--on this slick indoor surface.

"The beginning was not ideal, but that's tennis," Berdych explained. "It's three sets and the game can take a new turn any time. "It was mainly about serving. I was bad on first serves and when I don't have the pressure, I struggle. But then it changed."

Juan Martin Del Potro d. Ivo Minar 6-1, 6-3, 6-3

With his team trailing 1-0, Del Potro came out on fire as if to make a statement for Argentina. He lost just a single point on serve in the first set and capitalized on two of three break chances on the way to lightning-fast one-set advantage. Minar at least managed to win a few more return points in the second set, but the end result was the same. Del Potro again won the set by two breaks, his second one of set two finishing it off in style.

With the match all but over, Del Potro lost just a bit of focus in the third and surrendered serve once despite raising his service percentage. Again, however, the world No. 5 abused his opponent's serves. Del Potro broke serve twice more and closed out the proceedings with a routine service hold at 5-3.
