Mikhail Youzhny and Dudi Sela will contest the second singles rubber in the quarterfinal tie between Russia and Israel on Friday afternoon.
It will be the first career meeting between Mikhail Youzhny and Dudi Sela when the two players square off in a Davis Cup singles rubber on Friday afternoon. Youzhny and Sela will do battle in the second match of the quarterfinal tie between Russia and host Israel.
Not only will Sela have the home-court advantage, but he also heads into this encounter with plenty of momentum. The 5'9'' Israeli recently made it to the fourth round of Wimbledon, thus vaulting to a career-best 33rd in the world rankings. Sela is enjoying an impressive 2009 campaign even aside from Wimbledon; he qualified for the Australian Open and reached the third round, and he also qualified for an ATP 500 event in Memphis before going all the way to the semifinals.
Youzhny appears to be in the midst of a decline at 27 years old; he was No. 8 in the world early last season but now finds himself at 69th in the rankings. Somewhat surprisingly, however, Youzhny is actually having a decent year; at least far better than a dreadful 2008 season. The Russian finished runner-up in Munich and reached the semifinals in Kitzbuhel prior to the French Open, then made it to the Queen's Club quarters prior to Wimbledon. After first-round exits in Eastbourne and at Wimbledon, Youzhny is 20-16 on the year.
Given that Sela's confidence has to be at an all-time high, home-court advantage should be more than enough for him to treat the Israeli crowd to big victory on Friday. Furthermore, chances are good that Israel will be down 1-0 after underdog Harel Levy takes on formidable opponent Igor Andreev. Knowing that he almost has to win in order to keep his team alive, Sela should close this out in four sets.
