Fernando Verdasco will take on Andreas Beck in the opening singles rubber of Davis Cup quarterfinal-round competition Friday afternoon. The winner ensures a 1-0 lead for their nation.
Verdasco is set for a first-time meeting with Beck, leading defending champion Spain into Davis Cup quarterfinals action. The 25-year-old Madrid native is scheduled to play both singles and doubles, carrying the majority of the responsibility for the Spanish team. Spain enters the tie with Germany minus the services of top-ranked Spaniard and World No. 2 Rafael Nadal, who remains sidelined with injury.
Verdasco, ranked 9th in the world, heads into the tie a solid 30-12 on the season, advancing to the quarterfinals or better in eight of 12 tournaments. The Spaniard, who reached a career-high World No. 7 in late April, reached the round of 16 at the All-England Club before falling to Ivo Karlovic in four sets.
Verdasco played a critical role for Spain in Davis Cup last year, securing two wins during the finals against host nation Argentina. The 25-year-old won his doubles match with partner Feliciano Lopez, as well as his singles rubber, defeating Jose Acasuso in five hard-fought sets, 6-3, 6-7, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1.
The 51st-ranked Beck heads into the tie a modest 10-8 on the year, having reached his highest career ranking to date in July. The 23-year-old, making his debut in Davis Cup on Friday, has split his time between the ATP World Tour and the Challenger tour this season.
Host nation Spain was awarded the choice of surface, electing to contest the tie on an outdoor clay-court.
